About the Buildings:The fortress-palace complex of Masada is located on an isolated plateau near the western coast of the Dead Sea.Masada was founded by one of the Hasmonean kings of Judea in the late second centuryB.C., lavishly embellished byKing Herod a century later, and defended to the death by Jewish inhabitants that chose to commit mass-suicide rather than surrender and be enslaved to the Romans during the war ofA.D. 66 to 74.
