General Information:
Lying across the Gulf from the Arabian Peninsula, Iran is a land dominated by mountains, with a huge expanse of desert in its centre. The climate is hot and dry, although more temperate conditions are found on the shores of the Caspian Sea. In the winter terrible dust storms sweep the desert where almost no life can survive. Most of the population live in the north and the west where Tehran is situated, the only good agricultural land is the Caspian coastal plain, where wheat, barley, potatoes and rice are grown. Fresh and dried fruit are the countries main exports apart from petroleum, most of Iran’s oil is in the southwest. Other valuable minerals include coal, Iron ore, copper, lead and precious stones. Main exports are petrochemicals, carpets and rugs, textiles, raw cotton and leather goods.
